| The Viking bands have received 1st division ratings at the district and state level band contests for the past 24 years. The symphonic band made 4 consecutive appearances during the late 1980’s in the “Superstate” Contest held at the University of Illinois. During the 1990’s, the bands won their class at the ISU Invitational Concert Band Contest 6 times and were selected as the overall “Grand Champion” in both 1995 and 1996.

The band has placed 1st 4 times and 2nd twice in their 7 appearances at the “Lake County Live” Band contest held at the College of Lake County each April since 1998.
The band performed in the Dixie Classic Festival at Kings Island in Ohio in April 2000 and won the Grand Sweepstakes Award at the Showcase Music Festival in Sandusky, Ohio in 2001.
Since 2002 the Viking Symphonic Band has performed in the Music in the Parks festivals in Cincinnati, Sandusky, and St. Louis. The band won their class and the overall junior high division in 2002, 2003, and 2005.

| The band program has commissioned 2 major works for concert band. On May 5th, 1996 the symphonic band premiered “Swans Island Sojourn” a piece by Steven Reineke written to celebrate Viking Schools 25th Anniversary. On May 15th, 2001 the band premiered another major work for concert band written by Mr. Reineke. “Fate of the Gods” was written to commemorate the opening of our new school building. |
